Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a pattern of hyperactivity or impulsive behavior that interferes with a child's ability to function at school, home or in other environments. These behaviors are more frequent and severe than are seen in children of the same age and developmental levels.
The South Bay Children's Health Center provides a comprehensive evaluation, including the assessment of a child's learning ability, mood regulation, behavioral difficulties and coping skills.
An initial consultation with a psychologist includes a preliminary ADHD screening. If a child meets the criteria for ADHD during the initial consultation, a complete assessment consists of the following components:
- Cognitive functioning testing
- Social and emotional testing
- Computerized ADHD testing
- Empirically-tested questionnaires completed by parents, teachers and the child
- School observation
- Meetings with parents
A specific medical evaluation (completed by the child's pediatrican) will be required to identify any medical reasons for attention difficulties or hyperactivity.
A full evaluation report is provided outlining the child's strengths and weaknesses, with recommendations for further treatment. Assessments are completed by licensed psychologists, or by registered psychological assistants who have completed their Doctorate in Psychology. All staff involved in assessments have been trained in administering and interpreting psycho-diagnostic tests, and best practice standards are followed.
